In Praise of Titebond III

I really love Titebond III wood glue.  It’s waterproof, it cleans up with water and it creates new possibilities for designing outdoor furniture because you can glue joints and laminate wood without worrying that the glue joint will fail over time.

Waterproof is a big deal because when you build wooden furniture and stick it outdoors, you’re just asking for trouble. It gets blasted with UV sunlight, it expands and contracts with changes in humidity (rain is, like, a seriously big change in humidity) and it has to deal with the living earth where tiny microbes think of chair legs as food. It’s just a harsh environment so you have to design and build with this reality in mind.

When I first started building adirondack chairs, gluing the frame together required the use of a two-part epoxy.  It was a sticky hot mess.  I’d have to make small batches to avoid wasting too much of the product, and it wasn’t cheap.

With Titebond III, there’s virtually no waste, clean up is a breeze and, best of all, I can now laminate parts to increase their strength because the glue line is actually stronger than the surrounding wood. And I’ve been able to reduce the number of screws I use in various pieces without sacrificing strength.

When something comes along that makes work more efficient and the product better, I want to say thanks.
