No. 917 Outdoor Chair and Legrest
Chair
What you’re looking at is a modification of Gerrit Rietveld’s Red-Blue Chair, circa 1917 (photo on the right). I made a few changes to the basic design so that the chair and legrest can live outdoors in a much harsher enviroment.
I divided both the seat and the back into four slats to accommodate wood movement. I added a rail to strengthen the lower rear frame, and I moved the arms out a little. I also laminated the parts that make up the frame to achieve the correct dimension (in cross-section) for the parts as well as strengthen each component.
The chair also features what I call the three-plane joint for lack of a better phrase. It’s just the intersection of three parts in three different planes that are connected with glue and screws. A simple, strong joint.
The No. 917 is the penultimate in minimalist interpretations of the chair form. (A tree stump has to be the ultimate.)
Some assembly required. A square drive screwdriver and all stainless screws are included with your order. You can read even more about the design of the chair and legrest here.
