Here's a recent photo of the two-tiered plant stand:

Well, it's been a long time coming but we've finally finished the low plant stands, also known as bonsai stands. Here are some pics I shot recently. The stands come in two sizes. The larger stand is $65; the smaller one is $45. You can read more about the design of these stands here.

Here are the two versions together:

New Designs on the Way

A quick update. The little plant stand is about done. I intend to make two versions: a larger stand that’s 28" x 13.5" and a smaller stand (same basic design) that’s 20" x 9". Hope to have some pics up on the site in a few days.

The other bit of news is that I’ve completed revisions on a larger dining table. This is 54" square version based on our 48" square dining table. It can be delivered in two boxes which significantly reduces shipping costs. So now we have two new dining tables, several new plant stands and no photographs! Once the final versions are built, we’ll get the photos up pronto.

I also want to tell the story of the development of the square table but that will have to wait another day. I can say that a number of customers have inquired about a larger table but I’ve been held back by the shipping costs. Now, using a unique design element, we’ve been able to create a very sturdy table that is easily put together and meets FedEx/UPS shipping size requirements. Once we get the final version built and photographed, I’ll run down the noteworthy features of our new table. I also expect to make the 48" table available using this new design element. I’m very happy with the way it’s turned out.

All for now. We’re taking a vacation at the end of the week, but you can still reach us at 336-557-3079. I’ll post more when we return.

Bonsai/Garden Plant Stand: Developing a Prototype

I’ve been kicking around an idea for a low plant stand, pot stand, bonsai stand or knights-who-say-ni shrubbery display stand. Since this little stand is still in development, now's a good time to describe the process we use in developing a prototype of a new product.

The first step is the drawing. This was done on the proverbial napkin, but unfortunately that napkin has gone the way of all napkins so you’ll just have to imagine that there was a napkin and it had some scribble on it that resembled the stand and leave it at that.

Rough Shape

The next step is to rough out the shape on some scrap stock. That’s what you see here. This produces a 3-dimensional object I can look at from all angles and modify as desired.

New Stand Prototype on the MINI

Once I’m satisfied with the shape, I make a template, use it to trace the design on scrap stock, then cut it out on the bandsaw. Here (sitting on the sunroof of the MINI Cooper to give it the pond effect) is the rough shape with notches cut out on one side for the battens and some scrap on top to simulate the deck of the stand.

Bonsai Plant Stand Design: Part Three

New Stand Prototype

Here’s another view of the same shape in sunlight. (I’ve marked the right side of the piece where the notches should be sawn out.)

The completed stand will have an identically-shaped piece maybe 12-18" behind the first piece and the decking will run parallel with these shapes. The slats of the decking are screwed to battens (the two ends you see protruding on the left of the picture). The battens, in turn, are screwed to these shapes. Should be pretty sturdy.

Once we decide on a final design, the template will be modified to reflect the final design. It can then be used over and over again.

Of course, the photos simply show the design in the rough. In the finished product, the wood will be milled flat and sanded smooth, the edges rounded over, the top slats rounded over and undercut, and a finish applied.

So that’s how a basic design begins. Pretty simple really (and a lot of fun).

Two-Tiered Plant Stand

Two-Tiered Plant Stand

Our two-tiered stand can be configured so that the lower wing extends to the left or the right.  (Please specify.)  The tops are available either solid or slatted.  If used in an enclosed patio or porch, you shouldn't have a problem with a solid top cupping.  A slatted top allows for wood movement and stays flat.

Dimensions:  21"L x 21"W x 36"H
Weight:  15 pounds
Price:   $135.00
Shipping:  $13.50

Total  $148.50
